Starting Your Aikido Journey
Welcome! If you’re considering aikido but aren’t sure if it’s right for you, this page answers common questions about getting started.
Is Aikido Right for Me?
Good reasons to try aikido:
✓ You want to learn self-defense without being aggressive
✓ You’re looking for exercise that’s low-impact on joints
✓ You value mental discipline as much as physical training
✓ You prefer cooperation over competition
✓ You want to develop confidence and self-awareness
✓ You’re interested in Japanese culture and martial traditions
✓ You want to meet a supportive community of like-minded people
Who trains aikido?
Aikido practitioners come from all walks of life:
- All ages: While we focus on adults, aikido’s principles work for everyone
- All fitness levels: You don’t need to be athletic to start
- All backgrounds: Beginners and experienced martial artists alike
- Both genders: Aikido works equally well for everyone due to its principle-based approach
What Makes Aikido Different?
Traditional Martial Arts often emphasize:
- Strength against strength
- Winning or losing
- Aggressive techniques
Aikido emphasizes:
- Blending and harmony (aikido means “way of harmonizing energy”)
- Mutual benefit and learning
- Non-resistance and redirection
- Self-improvement rather than competition
This makes aikido accessible to people of all sizes and strengths, and appeals to those who don’t like competitive sports.
Common Questions
“Do I need any experience?”
No! We have complete beginners start all the time. The first weeks focus on basic movements and learning how to practice safely with a partner.
“Will I get hurt?”
Aikido is one of the safest martial arts. We practice with a partner who controls the intensity, and there’s an emphasis on falling safely. Most injuries come from overtraining, not the practice itself. Always tell your instructor about any physical limitations.
“How long before I can defend myself?”
Aikido takes time to develop real skill. Most practitioners feel confident in practical applications after 1-2 years of consistent training. However, confidence and body awareness improvements start from day one.
“What’s the schedule?”
See our Classes & Training page for the current schedule. We train Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday evenings. Most people start with 1-2 classes per week and gradually increase.
“How much does it cost?”
Pricing and membership options are customized for different needs. Contact us for current rates.
“What should I wear?”
For your first class, just wear comfortable clothes you can move in (t-shirt, athletic pants). We’ll explain about the formal aikido uniform (gi) after you’ve decided aikido is for you.
“Can I watch a class first?”
Absolutely! Visitors are welcome to observe before joining. Just let us know you’re coming so we can greet you.
“How does ranking work?”
Aikido uses a kyu/dan system:
- Kyu ranks (6th to 1st): Before black belt, typically 1-2 years per rank
- Dan ranks (1st onward): Black belt and instructor levels
Testing happens quarterly. Your progress depends on consistent practice and understanding, not athleticism.
